The Storage of Your Data is Important. Our Servers Will Protect It

Your storage data is the lifeblood of your business. Protecting it is often best served with the use of one of our servers. These servers provide your business with a reliable file storage solution for your most important data.

Losing your data can cost you untold misery and have a negative effect on your business’ bottom line. The configuration of your servers should reflect the fact that you value your storage data. The reliability of your data servers is critical, as a failure could affect your entire organization. When deciding which storage servers are right for your storage applications, you should consider the configuration of your hardware and software. Saving money on the initial purchase of your servers could cost you more in the long run, if your servers are unreliable or if you experience data loss or storage issues.

Building storage servers that meet you demands and protect your data might seem complicated, but our technical engineers can help you determine which servers are right for you.

Disk Drives for Your Custom Servers

The disk drives in your data storage servers have to be a workhorse. The drives in your servers must be able to handle a heavy load every hour of every day. The disk drives in your servers must also be reliable to protect the integrity of your data storage. Because of this, we recommend Enterprise class hard drives for all of our storage servers.

Enterprise drives simply make your servers better. They also function better with RAID controllers, another key aspect of protecting the data storage within your servers. Enterprise drives are better at handling bad sectors, and include compensation mechanisms that keep them running in top form.

Understanding RAID Levels in Your Servers

There are different RAID levels in which your data partitions can be configured in your servers. RAID level 5 is used is many of today’s storage servers because it provides a nice blend of storage capacity, speed, and reliability. However, some of the more modern, high storage capacity drives could pose problems with level 5 RAID storage configurations.

RAID level 6 solves many of these problems by affording more protection of the storage data in your servers. At Aspen Systems Direct, we recommend that every client consider going with at least a RAID 6 configuration in their servers.

For critical data storage applications, we recommend going with a RAID 10 level configuration in your servers. RAID 10 is the safest RAID level to use because your data storage is completely mirrored within the disks of your servers. RAID 10 is also the highest performing level, and on properly configured servers it is possible to get read speeds approaching 1GB per second. The only drawback to RAID 10 configurations is that it is the most costly because only half of the purchased storage space in your servers will be usable. However, when the safety of your data is paramount, then a RAID 10 level is the best bet for your servers.

Choosing the Right RAID Controllers for Your Servers

Choosing the right RAID controller for your storage servers is critical. We utilize LSI™ and Adaptec™ RAID controllers on our servers because they provide a wide range of controllers with a great cost-performance comparison. These RAID controllers have essential features that we consider a must for all of our servers; including support of multiple RAID levels and their ability to be equipped with BBUs or on-board flash modules. This means your storage data is protected in case of a power-outage.

The superior performance and unparalleled reliability of these RAID controllers round out the many advantages they provide your custom servers. Aspen Systems Direct unequivocally recommends these units for all of our servers because we have deployed thousands of them over the years. Our sales engineers can help you determine which RAID controller is right for your storage applications.

Monitoring Your Servers

Aspen Systems Direct builds all of its servers with reliability in mind. You can be confident that your storage servers will provide you years of trouble free service with little to no hassle. However, disk drives eventually fail, and when it does you need to do everything you can to make sure your storage data is protected.

The companies that design the RAID controller we use in our servers also provide software packages that will monitor the condition of the drives installed in your servers. When a problem arises, you will receive a notification so that you can take the appropriate action to protect the integrity of your servers, and your data.

Because our servers are so reliable, it is vital to have this kind of notification software installed. You might not have a disk failure for many years after your servers are installed, and because you trust your storage units you might look at them on rare occasions. When you get a notification you will know that it’s time to take action to protect your servers.
