What is a JBOD

A JBOD is an external storage unit which holds a bunch of drives. The name, JBOD, literally stands for, Just a Bunch of Drives. A JBOD Storage enclosure is usually a 2U, 3U, 4U or 5U Rack-mountable device that resembles a storage server from the outside. Like a storage server, a JBOD Storage enclosure usually has one or more power supplies for providing power to the drives. Unlike a server however, a JBOD enclosure does not have a system board or processor inside. JBOD enclosures provide additional storage for servers and/or storage servers. A JBOD storage enclosure usually has 12 or more hot-swappable, 2.5" or 3.5" SAS/SATA drive bays which can be easily removed and re-inserted as data capacity needs change. In order to control the drives inside a JBOD unit, a host server with host bus adapter (HBA) or compatible RAID Card with external port/s is required. With the appropriate server hardware, and Host Bus Adapter or RAID Controller, the JBOD can operate just like one or more RAID arrays inside of the actual server. A storage enclosure can be built with virtually any type of SAS or SATA drive including SSD's (Solid State Drives) and traditional spinner drives in various speeds and capacities. The number of drive bays available for populating a JBOD storage unit typically ranges in sizes of 12, 24, 36 and 45. JBODs are fully expandable and scalable meaning that you can start with a small number of drives initially, and add more as your capacity and budget require.

Why use a JBOD

The data capacity required in today's enterprise business and other advanced computing applications seems to be growing each day, if not by the hour. The requirements for increased storage often outweigh the performance requirements of an enterprise data server or workstation. JBOD enclosures allow an organization to expand its data capacity without replacing or upgrading its server and other vital hardware. JBOD enclosures are a scalable storage solution, meaning they can be expanded simply by adding more drives to the existing data array without interrupting work flow or operations. JBODS can be built for speed, high redundancy, high capacity or a combination of all three. The RAID Controller or HBA (Host Bus Adapter) on the storage server defines and operates one or more RAID arrays on the JBOD in exactly the same way as internal storage. JBOD Enclosures can be configured with one or more different drive types including SSDs, high performance and large capacity spinner drives. JBODs can also be used in a redundant environment for high-availability (HA) server applications.

JBOD Storage Types and Sizes

Aspen Systems Direct makes it easy and convenient to choose the appropriate JBOD solutions for your business or specific application using our configuration tool from the Supermicro JBOD storage menu on our website. Our Supermicro JBOD enclosures provide the perfect solution for every, storage situation. JBODs not only require lots of power, but need to be redundant. Each of our JBOD enclosures are equipped with Redundant Power Supplies, ranging from 1000 watt to 1600 watts. Adding a quality, RAID Host Adapter like the LSI 9200-8e SAS HBA will provide your server with the power to configure the JBOD in a variety of ways: JBOD Storage Enclosures can be configured as RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 10, RAID 5, RAID 6 and RAID 50 or any other type of RAID configurations that are commonly or uncommonly used on today's internal Server/Storage arrays. JBOD configurations come in a variety of rack-mountable form factors and sizes, ranging from 2U to 4UHD. The number of Drive Bays for each storage unit varies according to your capacity requirements. 12, 24, 36 and 45-Bay JBOD enclosures are most common, but can be smaller, larger or anywhere in between.

JBOD Drive Types

The other consideration for JBODs is the type of drives used. Smaller, 2U JBOD chassis' often use and accept 2.5" Hot-Swappable SAS/SATA, 6GB/s. The 2.5" drive bays are perfect for high-speed data transfer requirements where SSD drives and faster, 2.5" Spinner drives can be used. Where the largest, storage capacity possible is required, Storage Enclosures with 3.5" Drive Bays may be preferred. The larger, 4U HD JBOD Storage enclosures use 3.5" Hot-Swappable SAS/SATA, 6GB/s Drive bays making them capable of supporting the very largest SAS and SATA drives currently available.

Expandability of JBODs

Two, important, key benefits to remember about JBODs are flexibility and expandability. If you're current data storage needs are small, unpredictable, but likely to grow in the near and far future, you can invest in a storage enclosure with a greater number of drive bays than you currently need. This gives you the ability to add drives and data storage as you go, while at the same time taking advantage of reduced costs of storage as drive capacities grow. Provisioning your data requirements as you go is a key benefit to JBOD Storage.

Storage Redundancy

Some JBODs add an extra measure of redundancy with the use of additional, Redundant SAS2 Expanders. With the additional expander, these JBOD Storage units can provide additional storage and/or complete fail-over redundancy. JBODs with built-in expanders are the perfect solution for HA or High Availability server / storage applications.

Custom JBOD Configurations

While our online, Supermicro JBOD enclosure offerings do offer a broad selection of data storage solutions, the configuration tool is only the place to get started. We recognize that no, two storage or enclosure requirements look exactly alike from one organization to another. JBODs can be configured with multiple drive types, speeds and sizes depending on your specific application and storage goals. If you would like a custom-configured JBOD enclosure, contact Aspen Systems Direct today. We will provide you with the specific JBOD storage solution that works best for you and your business.
