Symantec OpenStorage and NetBackup

symantec openstorage-netbackupOpenStorage is a hot, industry computing industry buzzword these days. Of all the technical challenges facing Enterprise IT Managers today, managing storage has got to be at the top of the list as one of their most difficult tasks. Research suggests that enterprise storage is growing, on average, by 35-40% per year year. With your typical enterprise IT departments already having over a petabyte of data to protect and manage, a manageable, high-performance storage solution is more critical than ever. The one-size-fits-all, retail box software product is far too inflexible, rigid and limited to provide a viable disk storage solution. Enterprise business needs a scale-able, openstorage platform that can grow with their needs. Data managers have an enormous amount of responsibility to a company’s operations in this area. When a data disaster happens, they must have a recovery plan in place that can restore the full operations of the company with minutes. Having such a plan comes at a cost, budget and accountability to the finance department. The headaches of IT Storage managers is not confined to just one central location; in many cases they are responsible for managing multiple data center locations. To complicate things worse, they aren’t confined to just one database either. SQL, Oracle, DB2, SAP are databases that most enterprise Storage Managers are dealing with every day. Can you imagine the complexities of their job? A company’s operational efficiency and profitability relies heavily on the IT Data manager. Where do they go to for help?

Symantec OpenStorage NetBackup Solution

Symantec OpenStorage Technology is where more and more storage IT administrators are going to manage vast amounts of data. NetBackup is a media server that runs within the OpenStorage framework. Through a software developer’s kit, NetBackup vendors like SEPATON participate in the Symantec OpenStorage program to develop software plug-ins and devices for operating with NetBackup. The Symantec OpenStorage Technology provides storage management features and functions for providing data protection across an entire enterprise network. NetBackup Plug-ins do not have to be installed on every single backup device, reducing IT time and labor costs. Advanced data protection features such as auto image replication, optimized synthetics, granular recovery and accelerators also reduce costs by decreasing data flow and making automatic replication and disaster recovery a seamless process.
